Having initially mentioned Little Nan’s Cocktail Den in my Top Unusual Things To Do in London, I was then invited to the Launch of the all new Little Nan’s in Peckham, to see what all the fuss was about…
Firstly don’t be alarmed. You are in the right place. If like me you end up staring aimlessly at a pub called the ‘Golden Anchor’, questioning if google maps is having you on or not. Actually for once maps is being sincere. So head on in.
As you meander across an empty pub with a single TV screen illuminating the words ‘Little Nan’s Bar’, fear not as ‘Paradise is only a teapot away’, just follow the 80’s music leading you downstairs…
I’m not sure I’d describe it as paradise, unless of course paradise comes in the form of orange, leopard print and Pat Butcher… It felt more like I’d fallen into the Mad Hatter’s long lost Aunt’s bedroom. Maybe I did? Owner Tristan Scott pays tribute to his late Nan creating a room bursting with personality from the get go, with tropical plants to popcorn machines, there’s a Little Nan trinket for everyone.
This hidden - and I mean hidden - gem, toys with the notion of a night out and a night in. Whilst you sit back in Nan’s arm chair sipping cocktails out of vintage teapots, it’s easy to see how Little Nan’s Cocktail Den has been taking East London by storm. Drinks are served in one of Nan’s collection of teapots from £18 - £23 each, serving up to 4 people. Simply pick one of the china cups that aline the wall and start pouring...
‘Lady Bet Lynch’ (£21) was our teapot filler of choice. A Gin based cocktail including Deptford Lime, Elderflower Cordial and prosseco. It isn’t exactly a drink I’d drool over or necessarily even order again. Somehow the fact that there is no fancy mixologist or perfectly chiselled orange peel floating in your drink just works. After all Nan has whipped you up a cocktail. If you are however looking for the perfect palate cleansing espresso martini then I suggest heading elsewhere. But if a menu written in different coloured pens and a bar serving the Duke of Bermondsey alongside ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, is more up your street then get yourself to Peckham immediately.
The stand out of the night of course goes to Pat Butcher, oh yes, Pat is back. With walls full of framed pictures from solo shots to a reminder of Patrick Trueman and Pat’s love affair. Make sure to head over to Pat Butchers photo booth, try on wigs, necklaces, sunglasses, whatever takes your fancy and unleash your inner Pat. If that doesn't make you want to go, there is also Caribbean food, jerk, jerk and more jerk.
If you want to spice up your night out I’d suggest starting here with a teapot of your choice then head elsewhere to put your dancing shoes on. Sounds like your cup of tea? Then get booking here or just email email@example.com.
Open every Friday and Saturday till christmas, it’s time to whip out your biggest and boldest earrings in honour of dear old Pat.
